What Is The Difference Between Yoga And Pilates?

Finding a work out program that works best for you is really an individual process, but there are some exercise programs that seem to be similar and many are unaware of the differences.  When looking at yoga and pilates for instance, many can see how these two have similarities.  After all, they both work at building a stronger body and use very precise movements to enhance the individual’s strength. So what is the difference between yoga and pilates?

The Use Of Machines Is A Big Difference Between Yoga And Pilates

Yoga has been around for centuries and was developed in the Northern part of India.  It is a practice that incorporates both balancing the mind and the body.  Many that use this form of exercise report the benefits of the soothing nature of the movements and enjoy it for the way that it helps them relieve stress. There are different positions that people pull themselves into when they are doing yoga and these positions can be challenging for an individual.

Again there are different types of yoga too that involve a variety of movements or environments to help bring about the balance required in yoga.  With yoga a mat is required and there are also additional props that can be used to help enhance a workout.  In yoga there is an instructor that works with the group in doing the movements and breathing is particularly important in yoga to help with getting the mind and body working together.

A difference between yoga and pilates is found in the fact that in pilates a machine is used, although there are mat pilates classes too, but traditional pilates was designed to use a reformer.  This is a major difference between yoga and pilates as working out with a machine is designed to add greater amounts of resistance to a work out.  The machine was created in order to help patients who needed assistance with rehabilitation.  This is another difference between yoga and pilates as pilates was designed to help people who were in need of rehabilitation.

In both exercise routines, controlled movements are used to enhance the work out and breathing is stressed as part of the process.  Although there is a difference between yoga and pilates both methods of working out help strengthen a person without bulking up the muscles of a person.  They also both stress posture and the importance of alignment within the body.

Many find the primary difference between yoga and pilates surrounds the meditative part of yoga.  For many, they enjoy the concentration that is placed on this form of stress reliever but also find they like the work out a pilates routine has to offer.  By trying both, a person may find that they will do them both and receive double the benefits.
